What Is Contact Rate?
Also known as: Connect Rate
Contact rate is the share of dial attempts that end with a live person on the line, ideally the property owner. It is the first checkpoint in a calling funnel, sitting between dials made and conversations held, and it exposes list, number, and timing problems before they show up as missing leads.

Contact Rate explained
The arithmetic is conversations divided by dials, but the definition of a conversation has to be fixed in writing. Many teams count three tiers: answered calls, live human conversations, and right-party contacts, meaning the owner or a decision-maker. Answered includes voicemail and call screening; right-party is the number that matters for seller leads. A report that mixes the tiers makes two campaigns look different when they are simply measured differently, so the dialer’s disposition codes need to line up with the tier being tracked.
Contact rate is where list quality, number health, and timing show up in one figure. Bad skip-trace data lowers it because numbers are dead or belong to someone else. A spam label lowers it because owners decline the call. Calling at the wrong hour lowers it because nobody is home to answer. Managers compare contact rate by list source, by time of day, and by dialer mode before they blame the callers, since a caller cannot talk to people who never pick up.
A high contact rate is not the goal by itself. Dialing faster, redialing the same numbers, or loosening what counts as a contact can lift the rate while producing fewer qualified sellers and more complaints. Contact rate also says nothing about what happened in the conversation. Read it alongside the rate at which contacts become qualified leads, because the useful question is how many of those conversations turned into something acquisitions can act on. VA Horizon’s real estate calling is billed pay per qualified lead, so for its clients contact rate is a diagnostic, not the unit being purchased.
Example
Two lists of absentee owners are loaded into the same dialer on the same day. One produces far more live conversations for the same number of dials, and the manager traces the gap to a skip-trace source that returned mostly stale mobile numbers on the weaker list. The team retires that source instead of replacing callers.
