What Is EMV?

EMV, named for its original backers Europay, Mastercard, and Visa, is the global technology standard behind chip-enabled payment cards, an embedded chip that generates a unique code for each transaction, built to make counterfeiting and cloning a card far harder than it was with the older magnetic-stripe-only cards it has mostly replaced.

EMV explained

An EMV chip card is dipped or tapped (contactless EMV) at a terminal rather than swiped through a magnetic stripe reader. Each transaction generates its own unique cryptographic code, unlike a magnetic stripe, which reuses the same static data every time it's read, a difference that makes a cloned or counterfeit chip card meaningfully harder to use fraudulently than a cloned stripe card.

EMV specifically addresses card-present fraud, the risk tied to a physical, cloned, or counterfeit card. It has no bearing on card-not-present risk, e-commerce or phone-order transactions, which is governed by an entirely different set of fraud controls: address verification, CVV checks, and tools like 3D Secure, not chip technology at all.

For a merchant weighing a POS or terminal upgrade, EMV capability is a baseline expectation at this point rather than a premium feature to shop around for, EMV-capable hardware is now the standard across Clover, Toast, and effectively every current-generation POS or terminal on the market, so it isn't a real differentiator between competing vendors' equipment.

Why it matters when you're buying

If a prospect is still running non-EMV, swipe-only equipment, that alone is worth raising as a reason to have the upgrade conversation, a card-present fraud-liability gap that has nothing to do with rate and everything to do with genuinely outdated hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does EMV stand for in payment processing?
Europay, Mastercard, and Visa, the three card networks that originally developed the standard. EMV refers to chip-enabled payment cards and the terminals built to read them, dipped or tapped rather than swiped.
Does EMV protect against card-not-present fraud?
No. EMV specifically addresses card-present fraud tied to physical, cloned, or counterfeit cards. Card-not-present risk, e-commerce and phone orders, is governed by separate tools like address verification, CVV checks, and 3D Secure.
