Firmographic Data explained

Firmographic data is the foundation most ICPs are built on. Before a campaign ever reaches out, the target list gets filtered on a handful of firmographic bars: what industry, what revenue range, how many employees, what geography, sometimes ownership type, independent versus franchise, private versus public.

It is distinct from technographic data, what software or systems a company runs, and from buying signals, behavior indicating active interest right now. Firmographic data answers whether this company fits the target profile at all, a static, structural question, not whether this company is ready to buy today, which is a timing question.

VA Horizon's own qualification doc uses firmographics as the first of four written bars, alongside a revenue floor, a confirmed decision-maker, and confirmed interest, signed with every client at kickoff. It is the part of the criteria that gets checked before a conversation even starts, filtering the list itself rather than judging the conversation after the fact.

Why it matters when you're buying

A firmographic filter that is too loose, any company, any size, produces a list full of poor fits no matter how good the outreach is. Get specific about your firmographic bar, industry, revenue floor, employee count, before a campaign launches, since it is the cheapest lever to pull for improving meeting quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as firmographic data?
Company-level attributes like industry, annual revenue, employee count, headquarters location, and ownership structure. It describes the business itself, not any individual contact within it or any signal that they're actively in-market right now.
How is firmographic data different from buying signals?
Firmographic data answers whether a company structurally fits your target profile at all. Buying signals answer whether that company, or a contact there, is showing active interest or readiness right now. A company can match your firmographics perfectly with zero current buying signal.
