What Is GRR (Gross Revenue Retention)?
Gross revenue retention is the slice of a customer group’s starting recurring revenue that survives cancellations and downgrades, with all expansion deliberately left out. Because upsells cannot offset losses, the figure can never rise above the starting level, which makes it a blunt test of customer loyalty.

GRR (Gross Revenue Retention) explained
Think of GRR as net revenue retention with the good news removed. Begin with the starting cohort, work out what it lost to cancellations and downgrades, subtract that from the starting revenue, and divide by the starting revenue. Any upsell, cross-sell, or price increase is ignored. Each customer is also capped at what they paid at the start, so a customer who doubled their spend still counts only for the original amount.
Operators lean on GRR when they want to know whether the product keeps its customers without any help from the sales team. Strong GRR means new bookings go toward growth, while weak GRR means a large share of every new deal is replacing a departure. Buyers of software companies look at it because it is harder to flatter than the net figure, and a sales leader checks it before pouring more meetings into a segment.
The most common confusion is treating the two retention metrics as interchangeable. A company can show a healthy net number while its gross number is poor, if a handful of expanding accounts hide steady attrition. Another is counting a price increase as retention; it is expansion and belongs on the net side. As with churn, the cohort and the window have to be defined once and kept.
Why it matters when you're buying
An operator who reads GRR beside NRR can tell how much of next quarter’s pipeline is growth and how much is repair. It stops a persuasive net figure from overstating how sticky the product is, and it tells a seller whether a segment keeps what it buys.
