What Is Revenue Churn?
Revenue churn captures the recurring revenue that leaves a company in a period through cancellations and downgrades, measured against the recurring revenue it had on day one. Gross revenue churn counts only those losses; net revenue churn subtracts expansion from existing customers and can turn negative.

Revenue Churn explained
Start with the recurring revenue base on the first day of the period. Two things take it down: cancellations, where an account’s whole contribution disappears, and contraction, where a customer stays but pays less after dropping seats or a plan tier. Add those up and divide by the starting base for gross revenue churn. Subtract the upgrades, added seats, and cross-sells from those same customers and you have net revenue churn, which goes negative when expansion outruns the losses.
The practical use is pipeline math. Whatever leaves must be replaced before any growth happens, so churn sets the floor for how many new deals a sales team has to close just to stay level. A company with heavy leakage needs more booked meetings each month to grow at the same pace as a stickier competitor, and that changes how aggressively it should buy pipeline versus fix retention first.
Counting customers who signed mid-period in the starting base flatters the rate by padding the denominator. Comparing a monthly rate with an annual one without converting is another quiet error, and so is reading a price increase that customers absorbed as proof of low churn. The definition also needs rules for pauses, failed payments, and customers who come back after a gap, or two analysts will report two different numbers.
Why it matters when you're buying
A seller who knows this rate can judge what a new customer is worth and how much pipeline the company must create just to hold its ground. VA Horizon books meetings that add new-logo pipeline, and revenue churn shows how much of that pipeline only replaces revenue that already left.
