What Is Sales Cycle Length?

Sales cycle length counts the days from a defined starting point, usually opportunity creation or the first meeting, to a signed deal. Teams track it to forecast when pipeline will turn into revenue, spot deals that are stalling, and judge whether changes to targeting or process are speeding up or slowing down the path to close.

Sales cycle length counts the days from a defined starting point, usually opportunity creation or the first meeting, to a signed deal. Sales Cycle Length explained

The calculation is simple, but the choices behind it are not. Decide the start event (lead created, first meeting held, opportunity opened) and the end event (contract signed or payment received), then measure the days between them for each won deal. Use the median and the spread rather than a single mean, because a few very slow deals drag a mean upward and hide how most deals behave. Track lost deals separately, since they follow a different timeline from won ones.

Cycle length works as both a forecasting tool and a diagnostic. If a deal has been open far longer than similar won deals, it deserves a hard look. When cycle length grows across a whole cohort, the cause is usually structural: more people in the buying group, a new security review step, a weaker champion, or a drift toward lower-fit accounts. Outbound-sourced deals can run longer than referrals, because the buyer was not already looking.

Be careful with comparisons. A cycle measured from first touch is not comparable with one measured from opportunity creation, and different segments should never share one number. Blending a small-ticket product with an enterprise one produces a figure that describes neither. Nor should anyone shorten the cycle by moving the start date: reopening stalled deals as new opportunities makes the metric look better while the real time to revenue stays the same.

Why it matters when you're buying

Hiring pace and cash planning both depend on how long outbound effort takes to show up as revenue, and cycle length is the number that answers it. It also sets expectations for any outside partner: meetings booked this month may not close for a long time, so judging a program on month-one revenue misreads how the pipeline works.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you measure sales cycle length?
Pick a start event such as opportunity creation and an end event such as signature, then count the days between them for each won deal. Use the median and the range, segment by deal size and lead source, and track lost deals separately because they move at a different pace.
What makes a sales cycle longer?
The usual causes are more people involved in the decision, security and procurement steps, a weak or missing champion, vague urgency, and deals that were a poor fit to begin with. A higher price and a bigger change for the buyer also add review stages.
Is a shorter sales cycle always better?
Not automatically. A shorter cycle can mean faster revenue, or it can mean the team is only closing small, easy deals and avoiding harder ones. Judge cycle length alongside deal size and win rate, and compare each segment with its own history.
