What Is Wholesale Broker?

A wholesale broker is an intermediary that retail agents use to access surplus lines and specialty carriers they do not represent directly, placing hard-to-write risks the standard admitted markets decline.

Wholesale Broker explained

When a risk falls outside standard carrier appetite, unusual class, tough loss history, coastal property, emerging exposure, the retail agent does not have to walk away. Wholesale brokers hold relationships and contracts with excess and surplus lines carriers and specialty markets, and they place business on behalf of retail agents rather than dealing with insureds directly.

The division of labor: the retail producer owns the client relationship; the wholesaler owns market access for the difficult piece. Compensation typically flows through commission sharing on the placed business.

For business development, wholesaler relationships expand what a producer can confidently pursue. An agency with reliable wholesale access can say yes to niche and distressed risks its standard markets would decline, which widens the qualification bar for which meetings are worth taking. Like MGAs, wholesalers themselves are a different buyer persona: they grow through retail-agent relationships, not business-owner meetings, which is why our insurance program targets retail producers and principals.

Why it matters when you're buying

Wholesale access determines how wide a producer can prospect. Knowing what your wholesalers can place turns "sorry, we can't help" risks into winnable accounts, and changes which meetings you should book.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does a retail agent use a wholesale broker?
When the risk falls outside their appointed carriers' appetite: tough classes, adverse loss history, unusual exposures, or capacity needs the standard market will not meet. The wholesaler accesses surplus lines and specialty markets on the agent's behalf.
Does the insured deal with the wholesaler?
No. The retail agent keeps the client relationship; the wholesaler works agent-to-market. That separation is the defining structure of wholesale distribution.
How are wholesale brokers paid?
Commission sharing on placed business, occasionally with fees depending on the placement. The retail agency's share is smaller than a direct placement, but the alternative is usually losing the account entirely.
Do wholesale brokers buy business-owner meetings?
Generally no; they grow by winning retail-agent relationships. Meeting-generation programs built around business owners, like ours, fit retail producers, not the wholesale motion.
