What Is Economic Buyer?

The economic buyer is the specific person inside a target account who has actual authority over the budget for a purchase, the one whose sign-off a deal cannot close without, regardless of how many other people inside the account are enthusiastic about the product.

Economic Buyer explained

The economic buyer is one of the core checkpoints in the MEDDIC and MEDDPICC qualification frameworks, and it is deliberately kept distinct from the champion, the internal advocate who is not always the same person and, in larger organizations, rarely is. A rep can run a great demo with a genuinely interested user or team lead and still be nowhere near the person who actually signs the check.

In early-stage or founder-led companies, the economic buyer and the champion are frequently the same individual, the founder or a single decision-making executive, which is part of why pay-per-meeting economics work cleanly for smaller SaaS companies: one qualified conversation with the right person can move a deal end to end. In larger accounts, reaching the economic buyer usually takes more than one relationship inside the company, which is the same logic behind multi-threading.

For anyone buying demos through an appointment-setting vendor, confirming economic-buyer access, or at least a credible path to it, before a demo counts as qualified is one of the clearest ways to separate a real opportunity from a friendly conversation that goes nowhere.

Why it matters when you're buying

Before treating a booked demo as a real opportunity, confirm whether the person on the call controls budget, or has a credible, named path to whoever does. A demo with an enthusiastic non-buyer and no visibility into who actually signs off is a conversation, not yet a qualified deal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the economic buyer always the person who takes the demo?
Not necessarily. In smaller, founder-led companies, the economic buyer and the demo attendee are often the same person. In larger accounts, the demo attendee is more often a champion or user advocate, and the economic buyer is someone else entirely who has to be reached separately.
Why does MEDDIC separate economic buyer from champion?
Because conflating the two leads teams to mistake internal enthusiasm for budget authority. A champion can push a deal forward internally without ever controlling spend, so tracking both roles separately keeps a team honest about how close a deal actually is to a real yes.
