MEDDPICC is an eight-part sales qualification framework, Metrics, Economic Buyer, Decision Criteria, Decision Process, Paper Process, Identify Pain, Champion, Competition, that extends the six-part MEDDIC framework with two additional checkpoints built for longer, more complex, more competitive B2B SaaS sales cycles.

MEDDPICC explained

MEDDPICC keeps the original six MEDDIC checkpoints (Metrics, the measurable outcome the prospect wants; Economic Buyer, who controls budget; Decision Criteria and Decision Process, how and by whom the choice gets made; Identify Pain, a specific named problem, not general interest; Champion, an internal advocate) and adds two more. Paper Process asks what actually has to happen procedurally, legal review, procurement, security questionnaires, signature routing, for a verbal yes to become a signed contract. Competition asks who else the prospect is evaluating, and whether the deal is being run as a genuine bake-off or already leaning a specific direction.

Both additions matter most in exactly the deals where MEDDIC alone tends to miss something: enterprise SaaS sales with procurement gatekeepers and multiple vendors in the running. A deal can clear every MEDDIC checkpoint, real pain, a confirmed economic buyer, a genuine champion, and still stall for months in legal review because nobody mapped the paper process early, or lose outright to a competitor nobody scoped honestly.

For a company qualifying demos booked by an outbound vendor, Paper Process and Competition are the two questions most likely to get skipped in a quick qualification call but matter most for predicting how long, and how likely, a deal actually is to close once it looks qualified on the MEDDIC basics.

Why it matters when you're buying

On complex, multi-stakeholder deals, ask your appointment-setting vendor whether qualification includes Paper Process and Competition, not just the core MEDDIC checkpoints. A demo that is qualified on Metrics, Economic Buyer, and Pain can still stall for months if nobody asked who else is in the running or what procurement actually requires.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do the extra letters in MEDDPICC add over MEDDIC?
Paper Process, what procedural steps (legal, procurement, security review, signature routing) have to happen for a verbal yes to become a signed deal, and Competition, who else the prospect is evaluating and how seriously. Both matter most in longer, multi-stakeholder enterprise SaaS sales cycles.
Should every SaaS deal be qualified with the full MEDDPICC framework?
Not necessarily. Simpler, faster, lower-ACV deals with a single decision-maker often move fine on a lighter framework like BANT or core MEDDIC. MEDDPICC's extra checkpoints earn their keep specifically on complex, procurement-heavy, competitively contested enterprise deals.
