What Is MEDDIC?

MEDDIC is a six-part sales qualification framework, Metrics, Economic Buyer, Decision Criteria, Decision Process, Identify Pain, Champion, that sales teams use to judge whether an opportunity is real enough to keep investing time in, not just whether a prospect agreed to talk.

MEDDIC explained

Each letter checks a different failure point. Metrics asks what measurable business outcome the prospect is trying to move. Economic Buyer asks who actually controls the budget, which is not always the person you are talking to. Decision Criteria and Decision Process ask how the prospect will evaluate options and who else has to sign off. Identify Pain asks whether there is a specific, named problem driving urgency, not a vague interest in "learning more." Champion asks whether someone inside the account is willing to sell on your behalf when you are not in the room.

MEDDIC is deeper than a simple checklist like BANT, and it shows up specifically in longer, more complex B2B sales cycles where one enthusiastic contact is not enough to get a deal across the finish line. A meeting can look qualified on paper, right title, right company size, right industry, and still fail every MEDDIC test if nobody involved controls budget or has a real, named problem.

For anyone buying appointments rather than running qualification in-house, MEDDIC is a useful checklist to hold a vendor's definition of "qualified" against. A vendor that cannot tell you which of these six checkpoints their process actually screens for is probably screening for fewer of them than their pitch implies.

Why it matters when you're buying

Ask any appointment-setting vendor what happens to a prospect who says yes to a meeting but cannot name a specific problem, does not control budget, or has no clear decision process. If the answer is "we book it anyway," you are paying for a scheduled conversation, not a qualified one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does each letter in MEDDIC stand for?
Metrics (the measurable outcome the prospect wants), Economic Buyer (who actually controls budget), Decision Criteria and Decision Process (how and by whom the choice gets made), Identify Pain (a specific, named problem, not general interest), and Champion (someone inside the account who will advocate for you when you are not in the room).
Is MEDDIC the same as BANT?
No. BANT, Budget, Authority, Need, Timeline, is a shorter, more surface-level checklist. MEDDIC goes deeper, particularly by separating the Economic Buyer from the Champion and requiring a specific pain point rather than general interest, which is why it is more common in longer, more complex B2B sales cycles.
