What Is Intent Data?

Intent data is a category of third-party data, usually aggregated from content consumption, search behavior, and review-site activity across the web, used to indicate that a specific company is actively researching a product category or solution right now, rather than just fitting a firmographic profile in the abstract.

Intent Data explained

Intent data is meant to solve a timing problem: firmographic fit tells you a company could be a customer someday, but says nothing about whether they are actually in-market this month. Intent providers aggregate signals, often anonymized at the company level, to flag accounts showing unusually high research activity around a given topic or category.

It is a distinct layer from firmographic data, structural fit, and from direct, first-party buying signals like a reply or a form fill, a specific, known contact expressing interest. Intent data sits in between: broader and earlier than a direct signal, but more timing-specific than firmographic fit alone.

Intent data is only as useful as the targeting layered underneath it. A company showing intent signal that does not match your ICP at all is still a poor-fit target, just one that happens to be researching the category right now, which is why intent data works as a prioritization layer on top of firmographic fit, not a replacement for it.

Why it matters when you're buying

If a vendor sells targeting built entirely on intent data without a firmographic filter underneath it, ask how they are screening for actual fit, not just topical research activity, since intent without fit still produces meetings that go nowhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is intent data used for in B2B sales?
To flag companies actively researching a product category or solution, based on aggregated third-party signals like content consumption and search behavior, so outbound targeting can prioritize accounts showing real, current research activity over ones that merely fit on paper.
Is intent data the same as a buying signal?
Intent data is one specific, aggregated category of buying signal, usually third-party and inferred. Buying signal is the broader term and also includes direct, first-party signs, like a prospect's own reply, that intent data providers don't capture.
