What Is Logo Churn?

Logo churn counts customers, not revenue. It is the number of customer accounts lost in a period divided by the number of accounts at the start of that period, so a tiny account and a huge one each count as exactly one lost logo.

Logo Churn explained

A logo is a company, whatever its seat count or contract size. To calculate churn, take the customers on the books when the period opens, count how many of them cancelled or failed to renew before it closes, and divide. Customers won during the period stay out of the base. A downgrade is not a lost logo, because the account is still a customer, so that loss belongs in revenue churn instead.

For anyone selling software, logo churn explains which kinds of customers stick. A company with many small accounts and a high logo churn rate can still look healthy on revenue if its largest customers stay, which is why the metric is usually cut by segment, plan, or industry. Reps selling into a segment with poor logo retention burn pipeline on customers who leave quickly, and the segments that renew year after year are where outbound effort compounds.

Timing hides the problem. A company on annual contracts shows almost no churn for eleven months and then a cluster at renewal, so a flat monthly chart can mislead. Definitions differ too: some teams count a logo as churned when notice is given, others when access ends, and others only after a grace period. Pick one rule and keep it, or comparisons across quarters stop meaning anything.

Why it matters when you're buying

Read next to revenue churn, logo churn shows how many relationships fail while revenue churn shows what those failures cost. Anyone who knows which segments keep losing customers can aim prospecting at accounts that renew, instead of spending pipeline on customers who were never likely to stay.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does logo churn differ from revenue churn?
Logo churn counts how many customers left, whatever they paid. Revenue churn measures how much recurring revenue left. Losing ten small accounts and one very large account can produce similar logo counts but very different revenue effects, so strong teams track both and break them out by segment.
Does a downgrade count as logo churn?
No. The customer is still a customer, so the logo is retained. The lost revenue from the downgrade shows up in revenue churn as contraction instead. Logo churn only records accounts that have fully left, through cancellation, non-renewal, or non-payment, depending on the rule the company chose.
How often should logo churn be measured?
Monthly and annual views answer different questions. Monthly rates catch problems early for month-to-month customers, while annual or cohort views fit companies on yearly contracts, where losses cluster at renewal. Whatever the cadence, apply the same definition of a churned logo every time so periods stay comparable.
