What Is a Ridge Cap?

Ridge cap is the row of folded shingles, either purpose-made caps or ordinary shingles cut down, that covers the peak where two roof slopes meet and the hip lines that run diagonally down a roof. It seals the joint the field shingles cannot reach.

Ridge cap is the row of folded shingles, either purpose-made caps or ordinary shingles cut down, that covers the peak where two roof slopes meet and the hip lines that run diagonally down a roof. It seals the joint the field shingles cannot reach.

Ridge Cap explained

Along a ridge or hip, the field shingles from each side stop short of the line where the slopes meet. Ridge cap closes that gap. Each piece is bent over the peak, nailed on both sides, and overlapped so the next piece hides the nails of the one before it. Installers start at the end facing away from the prevailing wind so the exposed edges do not point into it. Purpose-made caps are thicker and pre-bent, while cut-down three-tab pieces give a flatter profile. Over a ridge vent, the cap also hides the vent and calls for longer nails.

Ridge and hip lengths are measured in linear feet, separate from the square count, so they get their own line on an estimate and their own number on an aerial measurement report. On a roof with many hips, that quantity is easy for a scope to understate. Ridges, hips, and edges take the hardest wind, so creased or missing cap pieces are a standard thing for a rep or inspector to photograph from a ladder or a drone.

Ridge cap and ridge vent get confused, but they are different parts. The vent is a slotted exhaust opening beneath; the cap is the roofing that covers it. Profile is the other trap. A thicker, high-profile cap changes the look of the ridge, and a homeowner who expected a flat line should hear that before the job, not at the final walkthrough.

Why it matters when you're buying

The ridge is the line a homeowner sees from the street, and it is the line an adjuster’s measurements can shortchange. Talking ridge and hip footage separately from squares catches a short scope, and describing the profile choices up front keeps appearance surprises out of the finished job.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a ridge vent replace the ridge cap?
The two work together. Ridge vent is the slotted exhaust opening along the peak that lets attic air out, and ridge cap is the shingle covering laid over it, which also hides the vent. A roof can have ridge cap with no vent, but a ridge vent always needs cap over it.
How is ridge cap measured for a roof estimate?
By the linear foot, adding the ridge length and the hip lengths. It is separate from the square count used for field shingles, so measurement reports list ridges and hips on their own lines, and a scope can understate them on a roof with many hips.
Can ridge cap be cut from regular shingles?
Many roofers do cut and bend standard or three-tab shingles into cap pieces. Purpose-made cap shingles are thicker and come pre-formed, which gives a heavier ridge line, so the choice changes the look of the roof. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the shingle line being installed.
