What Is Soffit?

Soffit is the finished underside of a roof overhang, the horizontal panel visible when looking up at the eave from the ground. It spans from the back of the fascia to the exterior wall and may be solid or vented.

Soffit is the finished underside of a roof overhang, the horizontal panel visible when looking up at the eave from the ground. It spans from the back of the fascia to the exterior wall and may be solid or vented.

Soffit explained

Where the roof extends past the wall, the underside needs a finished surface. Soffit panels span that gap from the fascia to the wall, and they are made of vinyl, aluminum, wood, or fiber cement. Vented soffit has perforations or slots that admit outside air to the attic, while solid soffit simply closes the overhang. Vinyl and aluminum panels slide into channels along the wall and the fascia, and wood or fiber cement panels are nailed to the framing.

Soffit is one of the few roof parts a rep can inspect at eye level from the driveway. Water stains, peeling paint, sagging panels, holes where animals got in, and wasp nests all show from the ground. In claims, soffit is trim, and an adjuster will ask whether the storm did the damage. Missing panels after high winds are straightforward; slow staining from a gutter that has overflowed for years usually is not.

The common error is calling soffit the same thing as fascia, or treating every soffit as a vent. Another comes up in replacements: panel profiles and colors are not always available, so matching an existing soffit can be harder than it looks, and that is a conversation to have before the quote, not at the end of the job. Closing off vented soffit with solid panels during a siding project quietly kills the attic’s intake.

Why it matters when you're buying

Soffit is a chance to show attention to detail before anyone gets on the roof. Pointing out a stained panel or a blocked vent from the driveway earns a few minutes of the homeowner’s attention, and flagging a matching problem early keeps a trim repair from turning into a dispute at the end of the job.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does soffit do on a house?
Soffit closes the underside of the roof overhang, which keeps out pests and weather and gives the eave a finished look. When it is vented, it also lets outside air into the attic, supplying the intake that exhaust vents at the top of the roof depend on.
Does soffit have to be replaced with a new roof?
Only when it is damaged, rotted, or being changed for a ventilation upgrade. Soffit is trim and ventilation, not part of the roof covering, so it normally stays. If panels are removed to work on the eave, the contract should say who replaces them.
What are the signs of damaged soffit?
Water stains, peeling paint, sagging or missing panels, holes where animals have entered, and nests are the visible signs. Stains often point to a gutter overflow or a roof leak above, so soffit can tell a rep where to look before the roof itself is inspected.
