Arizona combines top-tier solar resource with growing residential demand, and its net-metering policy is evolving in a direction that favors battery-forward sales, meaning the state's own regulatory trajectory is pushing homeowners toward systems paired with storage rather than export-credit-dependent, battery-free installs. That state-level shift lines up with a national one. The solar-plus-storage attach rate hit 45% of installs in Q1 2026, up from 38% a year earlier, and US residential battery storage installations grew 51% year over year in 2025, reaching 3.1 GWh, the one segment of the solar industry genuinely expanding while overall residential installs are forecast to contract 18 to 21% for the full year. Arizona's net-metering evolution is not happening in isolation. It is a state-specific version of a national reordering of what a sellable solar system looks like in 2026, one where battery attachment is increasingly the difference between a system that pencils out under current export-credit terms and one that does not. That matters directly for appointment quality. Nationally, customer acquisition cost is projected to spike 40% to $0.84 per watt in 2026, up from a five-year low of $0.60 per watt in 2025, which means a wasted consultation costs more today than it did a year ago. An Arizona appointment that never surfaces whether the homeowner is open to a battery-paired system, and at what budget or financing structure, wastes a closer's afternoon in exactly the market where that homeowner's own net-metering terms are pushing them toward storage anyway.
