What Are Solar Equipment Warranties?

Solar equipment warranties are the separate written coverages attached to a system: a manufacturer warranty on the panels, another on the inverter or microinverters, one on any battery, and the installer’s own workmanship warranty. Each has its own length, scope, and claim process, so a single headline never tells the whole story.

Solar equipment warranties are the separate written coverages attached to a system: a manufacturer warranty on the panels, another on the inverter or microinverters, one on any battery, and the installer’s own workmanship warranty. Each has its own length, scope, and claim process, so a single headline never tells the whole story.

Solar Equipment Warranties explained

A system carries several layers of coverage. A product warranty covers defects in how the panel was made. A performance warranty covers how much output the panel must still deliver as it ages. Inverters, microinverters, and optimizers have their own terms, usually shorter than the panels’. Batteries add terms tied to remaining capacity or throughput. The installer’s workmanship warranty covers the installation itself, including roof penetrations. The long number in marketing usually belongs to the panel performance warranty alone.

Homeowners compare warranties line by line, so setters hear the question early: what is the warranty? The accurate reply is that the proposal lists each one separately and the closer will walk through who stands behind what. The questions that matter are practical. Does the warranty include labor to remove and replace a failed part? Is it transferable if the house is sold? What happens if the installer closes? For lease and PPA deals, the owner usually takes on maintenance, which changes the question entirely.

Warranties are only as good as the company behind them. A manufacturer’s coverage can survive an installer’s closure, but the homeowner may then have to deal with the manufacturer directly, and labor may no longer be covered. Another trap is stacking marketing language, such as lifetime coverage, onto a document that limits it. Read for exclusions, conditions on registration, and who must perform repairs. Never paraphrase terms the paper does not state.

Why it matters when you're buying

Warranty is where trust gets tested at the end of a proposal review. Setters should never quote terms, but they can say that panels, inverter, and workmanship are covered separately and that the closer will go through each one. Answering who pays for labor, and what happens if the installer is gone, wins over the homeowner who has been burned before.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a solar panel warranty cover?
Panels usually carry a product warranty for manufacturing defects and a performance warranty for minimum output over time. Neither normally covers storm damage or a poor installation. Read the terms for exclusions, and confirm whether labor to remove and replace a panel is included.
Does the solar installer’s workmanship warranty matter?
Yes, because installation problems such as roof leaks, loose wiring, or poor mounting are not covered by the manufacturer’s equipment warranties. The workmanship warranty is the installer’s own promise, so it is only as reliable as the company. Ask how long it lasts and who honors it if the installer closes.
What happens to my solar warranty if the installer goes out of business?
Manufacturer warranties generally remain in force, but the homeowner may need to file claims directly and may have to pay for labor. The installer’s own workmanship coverage may disappear. That is why the installer’s stability and any third-party backing deserve a question during the sale.
