What Is a True-Up Statement?

At the end of each net-metering cycle, the utility issues a true-up statement that totals the electricity a customer imported and exported, applies any banked credits, and shows the balance owed or carried forward. In many programs the cycle runs a full year from the system’s start date.

Pay only for booked appointments. No retainer.

At the end of each net-metering cycle, the utility issues a true-up statement that totals the electricity a customer imported and exported, applies any banked credits, and shows the balance owed or carried forward. In many programs the cycle runs a full year from the system’s start date.

True-Up Statement explained

During the cycle the customer may pay small monthly bills for minimum or fixed charges while export credits accumulate. On the anniversary, the utility compares total imports with total exports and settles the account. Leftover credits may roll over, be forfeited, or be paid out at a rate the rules specify, depending on the state. Time-of-use programs often net energy within each pricing period instead of treating it as one pool.

The true-up is where unrealistic proposals meet reality. A homeowner promised a zero bill opens a statement showing an amount due, and the phone call goes to the rep or installer. The usual culprits are new usage, such as an EV or heat pump, a system that underproduced, fixed charges that never disappear, or an offset sized below real consumption. Reps who explain the cycle at the appointment field far fewer angry calls later.

Edge cases matter. Selling the home or switching to a different tariff mid-cycle typically triggers a final settlement, a system switched on mid-year has a short first cycle, and a customer on a lease or PPA still receives the utility’s true-up on top of the provider’s payment, because the utility account stays in the homeowner’s name. Do not call the result a refund or a bonus until you know which way the balance falls.

Why it matters when you're buying

The true-up is the moment a savings promise gets audited. Sales teams that explain the settlement cycle, the fixed charges that never go away, and the effect of changing usage turn a potential complaint or cancellation into an expectation that was met, which protects referrals as well as the single sale.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens at the end of a net metering year?
The utility totals everything the home imported and exported over the cycle, applies banked credits, and issues a statement showing the balance owed or carried over. What happens to leftover credits depends on state rules: some roll forward, some expire, and some are paid at a set rate.
Why did I get an electric bill after installing solar?
Solar rarely erases the bill entirely. Fixed charges remain, the system may offset only part of usage, and usage may have grown. A true-up can also show a balance if exports earned less than imports cost, so compare the statement with the offset your proposal described.
Does a solar lease customer get a true-up statement?
Yes, if the home is on a net-metering or similar tariff. The utility account stays in the homeowner’s name, so the utility still settles imports and exports, and the homeowner also pays the lease or PPA provider separately under that contract.
