Why This List Matters If You Buy Solar Appointments
Solar is in the middle of its largest shakeout in roughly two decades. More than 100 companies, ranging from national installers to sales orgs and financiers, have filed for bankruptcy or shut down since 2023. Some of the failures trace back to the same acquisition model this vertical's other pages cover: dealer networks built on aggressive door-to-door commission structures, stacked on top of rising CAC and a financing environment that shifted faster than some balance sheets could handle.
If you are buying leads or appointments from a vendor, this list is a due-diligence tool. A vendor's stability, billing transparency, and criteria discipline matter more when a chunk of the industry around them is disappearing mid-contract.

This page tracks confirmed, publicly reported bankruptcy filings and shutdowns for solar installers, dealers, and financiers, each with its own cited source. It is not a real-time feed. It reflects filings reported as of the publish date below, and gets refreshed as new filings are confirmed in trade press or court records.

The Numbers
More than 100 US solar companies have filed for bankruptcy or shut down since 2023, the largest wave the industry has seen in roughly 20 years.
Titan Solar Power, a top-10 US residential installer, filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy on June 13, 2024, following rapid growth through dealer networks tied to overselling and misrepresentation claims.
SunPower Corp filed Chapter 11 in August 2024. Its Blue Raven Solar brand, New Homes division, and non-installing dealer network were sold to Complete Solaria for $45 million, and Complete Solaria rebranded itself "SunPower" in 2025 as a different legal entity.
Lumio, a residential solar installer and financing company, filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2024. Public reporting on the filing is limited beyond the confirmed date.
Sunnova filed Chapter 11 in June 2025, reporting $10 billion to $50 billion in combined assets and liabilities and cutting 718 jobs. Its assets were sold to Solaris Assets, and its reorganization plan was confirmed in November 2025.
Mosaic, one of the largest solar loan and home-improvement financiers and a creditor in the Freedom Forever bankruptcy, filed Chapter 11 in June 2025 alongside Sunnova.
PosiGen, a specialist in low-income and lease-model solar that served 40,000 customers across 15 states, ceased most operations in August 2025 and filed Chapter 11 on November 24, 2025. Its liquidating plan was confirmed February 24, 2026.
Freedom Forever, the #2 US residential solar installer with roughly 6.1% market share, filed Chapter 11 on April 15, 2026, reporting $500 million to $1 billion in liabilities, more than 3,600 employees, and roughly 2 GW installed across 35 states. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton had named the company in a fraud-practices probe on April 3, 2026, twelve days before the filing.
Roughly 21,000 clean-energy jobs were lost and more than $24 billion in investment was cancelled nationally through September and October of 2025, a direct result of the installer shakeout.
At least 1,691 solar-specific layoffs were recorded through WARN notices in 2025 alone.
The US solar workforce stood at more than 280,000 workers as of late 2025, down from a record 464,053 in the 2024 National Solar Jobs Census.
