What Is Credit Prequalification?

Credit prequalification is a quick, usually soft-inquiry check that estimates whether a homeowner is likely to be approved for a solar loan, lease, or PPA before any formal application. It requires the homeowner’s consent, does not commit anyone, and is an estimate rather than an approval.

Credit prequalification is a quick, usually soft-inquiry check that estimates whether a homeowner is likely to be approved for a solar loan, lease, or PPA before any formal application. It requires the homeowner’s consent, does not commit anyone, and is an estimate rather than an approval.

Credit Prequalification explained

Finance providers run prequalification through their platforms with the homeowner’s authorization, using a soft inquiry that does not affect credit scores, and return an indication of likely eligibility. A hard inquiry follows at formal application. Providers set their own credit and income criteria, and lease or PPA programs have their own thresholds, which can differ from loan programs.

With third-party ownership taking so much of the 2026 market, credit gating decides whether a sat appointment becomes a deal: a homeowner who cannot clear the provider’s review cannot sign. Closers therefore run prequalification early in the visit, or beforehand when the homeowner has consented, so the conversation follows an option that can actually be financed. Setters should not ask about scores or run credit; their job is to learn whether the homeowner is open to a financing review at the visit.

Caveats: prequalification is not approval, and approval can change after the full application when income, debt, or title issues surface. A decline may reflect identity or data errors that can be fixed on the spot. Consumer-credit rules govern consent and notices. Reps should never guess a homeowner’s creditworthiness from the neighborhood or the house, and never promise approval.

Why it matters when you're buying

A visit that dies at the credit screen costs the closer a trip and the homeowner an hour. Teams that frame financing as a standard step, run the check with consent, and keep a fallback path ready lose fewer sat appointments. VA Horizon screens for homeowners open to a financing path and leaves the credit review itself to the client’s finance partner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does solar prequalification affect my credit score?
Most prequalification tools use a soft inquiry, which does not affect scores, but practice varies by provider. A full application usually triggers a hard inquiry, so ask which kind is being run and get the homeowner’s consent first.
Is credit prequalification the same as approval?
No. Prequalification estimates eligibility from limited information. Approval follows a full application and verification of income, identity, and sometimes the property, and it can come out differently from the estimate, so never treat the first result as final.
Do solar leases and PPAs require a credit check?
Providers generally review credit before offering a lease or PPA, since they are extending long-term financing for equipment they own. Criteria differ by provider and program, so a decline from one does not always mean a decline from another.
