What Is a Grid-Tied System?

A grid-tied solar system is connected to the utility grid through the home’s electrical panel and meter, drawing from the grid when the panels fall short and sending surplus back when they overproduce. Without battery backup, it shuts down during a grid outage for the safety of line workers.

A grid-tied solar system is connected to the utility grid through the home’s electrical panel and meter, drawing from the grid when the panels fall short and sending surplus back when they overproduce. Without battery backup, it shuts down during a grid outage for the safety of line workers.

Grid-Tied System explained

Power flows both ways at the meter. By day the system feeds the home first, and any surplus goes out to the grid. At night or on dark days the home pulls from the grid as it always has. The inverter stays synchronized to the grid’s signal and is built to stop quickly when that signal disappears, a protection called anti-islanding. That behavior keeps a house from energizing lines that repair crews believe are dead.

Almost all residential solar is grid-tied, so the term mostly shows up as a contrast with off-grid systems and as an expectation problem. Homeowners assume solar means independence from the utility and from outages. A grid-tied system still produces a bill, still depends on rate rules for how exports are credited, and goes dark in a blackout unless the design adds a battery and backup equipment. Closers should say so before a signature, not after the first storm.

Off-grid and hybrid get lumped in. Off-grid systems have no utility connection and must carry their own storage and often a generator, which makes them rare for homes with grid access. Hybrid systems stay connected and add batteries. The grid connection also brings paperwork, since the utility has to approve the interconnection before the system can run, which is why panels on a roof are not producing power on day one.

Why it matters when you're buying

Finding out during the first blackout that solar does not keep the lights on is a sting that turns into cancellations and bad reviews. Saying early that standard solar stays tied to the grid and stops when the grid stops may cost a few prospects, but it keeps the honest ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my solar panels power my house during a blackout?
Not unless the system has battery backup and switching equipment that lets the house run apart from the grid. A standard grid-tied system shuts off during an outage so it does not push power into lines that crews may be repairing. Ask the closer exactly what is backed up.
How is a grid-tied system different from off-grid solar?
Grid-tied systems stay connected to the utility and use it as backup supply and as a place to send surplus. Off-grid systems have no utility connection and rely on their own batteries, often with a generator. Almost all home installs are grid-tied because it is simpler to run.
Do I still get an electric bill with a grid-tied solar system?
Usually yes. Solar reduces what the home buys from the utility, but the account stays active and most utilities still charge connection or minimum fees. The size of the bill depends on how much the system offsets and how the utility credits surplus power.
