Redline explained
Every solar system a rep sells has a minimum acceptable PPW baked in before commission is even calculated, the redline. Anything the rep sells above that redline becomes the pool commission, manager overrides, and company margin are drawn from. A rep cannot practically sell below it without the deal losing money for the company.
Redline pressure is one of the most direct ways rising CAC hits sales orgs and dealer networks specifically, more than it hits vertically integrated installers. With customer acquisition cost spiking 40% to $0.84 per watt in 2026, the redline has to absorb more of that cost somewhere, and a dealer network relying on 1099 reps and outsourced acquisition channels is the segment with the least room to move before it starts squeezing rep commission itself.
This is also why sales orgs and dealers are, per industry analysis, the segment most exposed to 2026's margin compression and the most likely to need cheaper appointment acquisition to protect the redline their reps' pay depends on. A rep who cannot make their numbers work above redline either walks or starts cutting corners on the deal itself, neither of which is good for the org's long-term close rate or reputation.
Why it matters when you're buying
If you run a dealer network or sales org, a pay-per-sit appointment vendor with a fixed, known cost per sit is a more predictable input to redline math than a variable-cost acquisition channel, since you can price the redline against a known appointment cost rather than a rising, unpredictable one.
