Authority Having Jurisdiction, or AHJ, is the local office, a city building department, a county permitting office, or in some areas a fire marshal’s office, responsible for reviewing and approving a solar permit application. It is a different reviewer entirely from the utility that later handles interconnection, the separate process of connecting a system to the grid, which means a fast AHJ says nothing about how fast the utility step will run afterward, and the reverse is also true.
