What Are Demand Charges?

On bills that include them, demand charges price a customer’s highest short-interval power draw during the billing period, measured in kilowatts, instead of total energy used in kilowatt-hours. They are common for commercial accounts and appear on some residential rate plans.

Demand Charges explained

The meter records the peak amount of power drawn over a short interval, and the utility bills that peak at a set price per kilowatt on top of the ordinary energy charge. Some tariffs measure the peak only within certain hours, and some carry a ratchet that keeps one high month’s peak on the bill for several months afterward. A single burst, such as several large machines starting together, can set the whole month’s charge.

Solar changes the energy line far more than the demand line. A cloudy afternoon or an evening spike can set the monthly peak at a moment when the array is producing little, so panels alone may barely move the charge. Batteries that cap the peak, or controls that stagger large loads, are the usual tools. Commercial appointments live or die on this, while residential ones matter only in territories with demand-based plans.

Reps often promise a near-zero bill from a system sized to total kilowatt-hours; where demand charges apply, that number may never be reachable. Another slip is confusing demand charges with a fixed monthly customer fee, which does not vary with use, or with time-of-use pricing, which prices energy by the hour but does not bill a peak. The bill’s line items reveal which one the account actually has.

Why it matters when you're buying

A closer who spots a demand line on the bill early avoids a proposal that promises savings the panels cannot deliver. It also tells the rep when a commercial prospect needs storage or load controls in the conversation, the point where a generic residential pitch loses a business owner.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between demand charges and energy charges?
Energy charges price total consumption in kilowatt-hours. Demand charges price the highest rate of consumption in kilowatts during a short interval, so two customers who use the same total energy can pay very different amounts depending on how sharply their usage peaks.
Do solar panels reduce demand charges?
Sometimes, but less reliably than they reduce energy charges. If the monthly peak occurs when the sun is out, panels help. If it occurs in the evening or under cloud cover, they may not, which is why storage and load controls often accompany a proposal for accounts with high demand charges.
Do homeowners pay demand charges?
Many residential plans do not include them, but some utilities offer or require demand-based residential plans. The bill will show a charge per kilowatt of peak demand if the account has one. A rep should check the bill before promising savings on such a plan.
