What Is Design Approval?

Before permits are filed, the homeowner is asked to sign off on the engineered system layout, equipment list, and size; that sign-off is the design approval. It confirms the plan the crew will build and records the homeowner’s agreement to any differences from the original proposal.

Design Approval explained

After the site survey, designers finalize panel placement, string layout, equipment, and electrical details, accounting for roof geometry, shade, fire-code setbacks, and the electrical panel. The homeowner reviews a drawing or rendering and signs electronically. The approved design then goes to engineering, permitting, and the utility, and changing it later usually means revisions and delay.

This is where the sales promise meets the roof. The proposal may have shown a full array on the south face; the final design might drop panels because of vents, shade, or setbacks, and the production estimate falls. Someone who first learns of the difference at design approval may stall or cancel. Saying at the appointment that the final layout is confirmed after the site survey keeps this stage routine.

Pitfalls: treating the approval as a formality and rushing homeowners through it, failing to explain changes in size or equipment in plain language, letting a spouse or co-owner be absent, and skipping the written record when a verbal okay is given. Approving a design is also not the same as signing the sales contract, and a change in price or terms may require a separate change order.

Why it matters when you're buying

Design approval is the last cheap exit for a homeowner who feels misled and the first gate where a project can stall. Describing the process honestly at the first appointment, including that the layout can shrink, tends to mean fewer surprises at this step and fewer signed contracts that never reach a permit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens at the design approval step for solar?
The installer sends the final layout, equipment list, and system size for the homeowner to review and sign. Once approved, it goes to engineering, permitting, and the utility. Changes after approval usually mean revised drawings and some delay.
Can I change my solar design after I approve it?
Usually yes, but later changes mean revised drawings and engineering and may delay permits or alter the price. The earlier you raise concerns, the cheaper and faster the fix, so review the layout and equipment list carefully before signing.
Does design approval change my solar contract?
Not by itself. It confirms the final layout. If the design changes price, size, or equipment in a way the contract does not cover, the installer should present a signed amendment, a change order, before proceeding with the work.
