What Is EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction)?

An EPC, short for engineering, procurement, construction, is a solar firm that handles the full project, design, equipment sourcing, and physical installation, in-house rather than subcontracting any piece of it out to a separate dealer or installation crew.

EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) explained

An EPC sits at the opposite end of the market structure from a dealer network. A dealer network sells and subcontracts installation out; an EPC owns the whole chain, engineering the system, procuring the equipment, and building it, without handing any of that off. EPCs tend to skew toward larger residential and commercial projects rather than the high-volume consumer D2D model.

That structural difference changes buying behavior. Because an EPC owns its own install crews, a wasted appointment slot is a wasted crew scheduling day, not just a wasted marketing dollar the way it is for a company buying leads to hand off to independent reps. This pushes EPC appointment demand toward fewer, higher-intent, more rigorously qualified consultations rather than high-volume shared leads an in-house team has to sort through.

Vertically integrated installers, who own both sales and install without a dealer layer in between, share this same crew-utilization logic, which is part of why Wood Mackenzie's 2026 analysis notes they are preserving more margin per watt than dealer-network-dependent competitors as CAC rises.

Why it matters when you're buying

If you run an EPC, ask any appointment vendor about qualification criteria and exclusivity specifically. Your buying priority, crew utilization, is different from a dealer network's priority, rep commission volume, and a vendor built around one does not automatically serve the other well.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between an EPC and a dealer network in solar?
An EPC owns engineering, procurement, and construction in-house with no subcontracting. A dealer network sells deals through 1099 reps but subcontracts the actual installation out to a separate crew or installer.
Why do EPCs care more about appointment exclusivity than lead volume?
Because EPCs own their install crews directly, an appointment that does not convert wastes crew scheduling capacity, not just marketing spend, which pushes EPC buying behavior toward fewer, higher-intent exclusive appointments over high-volume shared leads.
